Can I negotiate trade-in value separately from the new car price?
Every dealer wants to bundle everything - new car price, trade-in, financing into one payment number. I know this hides things. Best way to keep trade-in negotiations separate and transparent?

Absolutely. Strategy is called 'de-linking the deal.' Tell the salesperson: 'Three separate transactions: price of new car, value of my trade, and financing. Each number on paper before we discuss the next.' Start with new car price. Once locked, then trade-in. Finally financing. If they resist, that's a red flag.
Get your trade-in appraised at an online car buyer first. A concrete written offer gives you a negotiation floor. If dealer won't match, sell to the online buyer and buy as separate transaction.
