How often should I rotate my tires and is it really necessary?
I drive about 20,000 km/year in a FWD sedan. Manual says rotate every 8,000-12,000 km. Is this actually important or is it one of those things shops push? What happens if I skip?

It IS important. Front tires wear faster on FWD (steering, braking, acceleration). Without rotation, you'll replace fronts twice as often as rears, and handling deteriorates. Rotate every oil change (or every other with synthetic intervals) for even wear, extending tire life 20-30%. Many tire shops do it free if you bought tires there.
Skipping means uneven wear leads to vibration, reduced wet traction, and needing new tires sooner. It's one of the cheapest maintenance items with real ROI. Most shops charge $20-40 or free with purchase.
